Mining for EV Battery Materials
Some of the raw materials associated with electric vehicle battery production require an escalation in mining operations to meet anticipated demand. Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Graphite, Manganese, and Aluminum are the most relevant materials for modern EV batteries. As electric vehicle adoption increases exponentially, so does the need to mine for these materials.
In general, there are financial, environmental, political, and human rights concerns associated with mining that should be addressed early in planning for accelerated EV adoption. This section addresses each of these issues for each of the relevant materials needed for battery production. Additional references and supporting documents are also provided.
